Google search tips

Posted on by Clive Walker in Google

I wrote this post a while back. The content can still be relevant but the information I've linked to may not be available.

Google Guide has published a useful crib sheet with Google searching tips and advanced search operators. Some of these come from the Google Cheat Sheet but it’s still a useful reminder of all the different searches that Google supports.

The ones I use the most are:

  • site:urlhere – finds all page indexed by Google for a particular URL. Very useful to know this for a new website.
  • link:urlhere – finds pages with links to your URL. This is not always comprehensive in my experience but still useful to know.

One point to note. Google will sometimes not display all the results if they are similar. In this case, there will be a message “In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the xxx already displayed”. Click the link underneath the message to show all results.
