Microformats reinforce the semantic web and are borne from inherent weakness with the current Web standards (if anyone can believe such things). A great resource is over at http://suda.co.uk/projects/microformats/cheatsheet/
It’s a guide to add semantic value to Web documents where none currently exist and makes it easier to understand what Microformats is all about on a practical level, an area the Microformats website lacks clarity in.
