Jeremy Keith knows a lot about Irish traditional music

The last £5 App meeting in Brighton featured web developer Jeremy Keith talking about his website The Session. At least, that's what I thought it was intended to be. In fact, Jeremy gave a detailed introduction to the website by talking about the history and background to traditional Irish music, including some music playing demonstrations with an Irish bouzouki .... and then followed this with a description of the web development behind The Session.

If only I had a more musical ear, I would now know the difference between a jig, a reel, a hornpipe, and other such types of Irish tunes!

Screenshot of The Session Actually, the web development part of the presentation was equally effusive and one of the main points that came across was lots of attention to detail in the development of the website and a carefully considered, incremental, development plan.

The Session started as a personal 'hobby' and was originally a way for Jeremy to add tunes that he knew. Since then, the website has grown to include thousands of members and tunes.

I liked the community rule that was given to members, just "Be civil". If only that applied to some of the more outlandish comments I sometimes get on Horsham Pub Guide! I also liked the emphasis on a minimal use of graphics to ensure website speed and the use of JavaScript tabs for navigation.

I think I learnt quite a lot from the presentation, some of it rather unexpected I have to say...
