Create a web design inspiration portfolio

Posted on by Clive Walker in Web Design

I wrote this post a while back. The content can still be relevant but the information I've linked to may not be available.

I keep a lot of websites in my mind as sources of ideas and inspiration but I thought it would be useful to have a visual representation of these. So, I have created a photoset on Flickr containing screenshots of some of my favourite websites.

These are websites that say to me “Wow, that really works”, either in design terms or in functionality (often, both). Mostly, they have great content, use CSS extensively, and have high coding standards as well. All in all, they are the best that’s out there IMHO.

I also wanted to put a few more images on this blog and this seemed like one way of doing that.

An advantage of using Flickr is that I can easily publish the screenshots on this blog using a Flickr badge. You can see this in the righthand column under the ‘Inspiring’ header.

Quick and Easy

Previously, I have created screenshots like this by using Alt + PrintScreen, pasting the image into Fireworks, cropping it and exporting into a folder, followed by uploading to Flickr. However, I want this to be more concise process so I am using the Screengrab! Firefox extension to do the whole thing in a lot less clicks.

When installed in Firefox, the extension allows you to right click on any screen, and save the viewport, window or whole page as a .png image into a folder of your choice. Then it’s simply a case of using the Flickr uploader, adding a few tags – and it’s done. The new image/screenshot appears as a thumbnail immediately on this blog because the Flickr badge code automatically displays the last few images from the Flickr photoset.

This is also a nice way of showing different images on any website on a regular basis. In my case though, I will be quite selective and the websites I choose for the Inspiring section will only be what I consider to be great examples.
