Joining Twitter late

Posted in on 6 January 2009

I must admit I did not understand the Twitter thing at first. However, after seeing more and mentions on TV recently, I’ve decided to join and see what’s going on that I might be missing. Here I am. Sorry ‘bout the picture.

I suspect that I will be a bit of a lurker at first. Just to see what Twitter etiquette is. And also because most of my non-techno friends do not seem to have Twitter accounts. Oh well. I’ll be following people that I usually follow via RSS then.

I really can't understand what the hype about Twitter is. Do you think people will see this as a passing phase or something that will be around for a while?

I have found Twitter very useful for keeping in touch, or having short discussions, with people with related interests and for answering questions or seeking help. I must say that I have received some great input from other people and picked up things earlier than I would have done otherwise. It has helped keep me in the web design loop I guess. As I use it more, I hope that I will make a few new contacts that I can follow-up in person at meetings/conferences.

It has also been rather addictive!

I think Twitter is here to stay because it is entering the mainstream now as celebrities use it and as people follow their favourite singers/actors/TV stars etc. There may be a Twitter burnout phase at some point, for some people perhaps, but for the moment it seems pretty essential to use, either for the reasons above, or as a marketing tool [which some people use it for].
