There is no ‘top secret’ to search engine optimisation of a website. Your website needs to have good content and it needs to have clean search engine-friendly code to ensure that the most important keywords are presented to search engines as efficiently as possible.
This assumes that the keywords are present on the website in the first place. This is not always the case and it is impossible to get a good search engine position for a specific keyword or phrase if it is not there in the website content. This may sound obvious – but this concept is not always understood (!)
What are the most important keywords? Well, they should describe your business and they need to be words that you think your web visitors will use to find your website. You may need to put yourself into the minds of your future customers for this.
You will also need to be realistic about keywords. For example, we are a UK-based web design company and for that reason we aim our keywords at the UK. In our view, it is better to aim for a specific niche. This is similar to the ‘big fish in a small pond approach’....
After your website has been optimised for your keywords/phrases, search engine visibility needs to be checked and some search engine submissions can be required at this stage.
We take a step-wise approach over several months to any website optimisation project. Search engine visibility needs to be checked at monthly intervals and further keyword optimisation may be neccessary.
This article is a summary of what is required but the amount of work is often dependent on the age of the website. Older websites were generally written differently and the code is not as search engine-friendly as more modern websites. Sorry, but that’s the way it is.
We can adapt any optimisation project to your budget but bigger companies have more resources and have someone working on their search engine position at all times. Be realistic is what we suggest.
